Launching of Vallée d’Osterlog Endemic Garden Foundation’s Masterplan on 2nd February 2010
Given the topography of the Vallée d’Osterlog, the dimension and magnitude of the project a MasterPlan had been commissioned to ensure that appropriate structures are set up for the proper development and management of the Garden so that all the statutory objects and functions of the Foundation are met as per The Vallée d’Osterlog Endemic Garden Foundation Act 2007.
On the second of February 2010, at the R. Burrenchobay Lecture Theatre, University of Mauritius, the said MasterPlan was officially launched by the Honorable Mr. Satya Veyash Faugoo, Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Production and Security in the presence of Honorable Mr. Lormus Bundhoo, Minister of Environment and National Development Unit.
The current MasterPlan has tried to its best to peel off the palimpsests of information that have been gathered, collected and contextualized. The task was daunting in its difficulty to get updated data, specialized input and accessibility to all its nooks and crooks.
The Garden would encompasses a Visitors’ Centre set over a pond would also house an Audio Visual Unit for projection of films and slides and a lecture theatre. All structures of the Visitors’ Centre would be environmentally friendly, ecologically sustainable and would produce as little waste as possible. Next to the Visitors’ Centre, there would be a pinic area with several kiosks at disposal of the visitors and also over the 275Ha for resting site and to view the splendid landscapes of the Valley.
The Garden would also comprise a Fernery and an Orchidarium for collection and propagation of all Native/ Endemic species. The Garden also consists of a nursery for propagation of Native/ Endemic Species for the development of the landscapes and for reforestations of the Valley.
On a concluding note, the MasterPlan sets the framework for a general vision of the programmed are and gives clear directions on what, how to proceed and also points out its dynamic nature with the ultimate goal of preservation and conservation of the unique biodiversity of the Vallée d’Osterlog Endemic Garden.
